Talented Leicester Tigers Academy player and Brooksby Melton College Sport student, George Martin, has been selected for the 2018 England Under 18s rugby squad.
George, 16, was selected for the England U18 squad after a series of successful performances representing BMC in the Academic and Sporting Excellence (AASE) league, and the Leicester Tigers Academy. Following this selection, George joined his fellow England U18 players in Bristol last week to begin the all-important preparations for their upcoming international games.
In addition to George’s fantastic achievement, fellow BMC AASE Academy player Alex Maxwell spent last week in Scotland training with the Scottish Exiles as they prepare for their U18 international season. BMC also saw five players selected for the county U18 squad, with two of these players going on to be selected for the Midlands U18 training group. BMC currently have 18 players involved with county U17 programmes spanning Leicestershire, Staffordshire, and Nottingham, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire.
George commented ‘I am pleased to be chosen for the England U18 training squad and thankful to the Academy and College staff, who have challenged and supported me throughout this academic year. I am really enjoying the challenge of playing at this level. It has been difficult to learn how the other players play and think, as we don’t yet know each other well, but things were starting to click by the end of the training week in Bristol. I am really looking forward to the upcoming games and hopefully the lads can put in a good performance in France.”
Tom Harrison, the Leicester Tigers Academy coach at BMC, said ‘The development of George Martin and the other players on the programme is credited to both the AASE programme and the commitment of the individuals involved. Here at Brooksby Melton College, we aim to transition our student athletes onto a higher level of performance: at first glance, many will assume that this refers only to rugby performance, but that is only a third of the programme. In addition to rugby training, we work alongside academic staff to ensure the players are growing academically and that they are leaving with qualifications that will allow them to gain access to Higher Education and employment. The final third of the programme focusses on lifestyle performance, which aims to help individuals become the best version of themselves. Within the lifestyle section, we work alongside the welfare support team and the academy psychologist to help these players develop both on and off the pitch.
The BMC and Leicester Tigers AASE programme incorporates high quality rugby coaching alongside a BTEC Level 3 Sports qualification, ensuring that students are able to play to their highest ability whilst completing recognised academic qualifications.
This year’s BMC AASE team has enjoyed a series of both local and national successes, finishing fourth in the national AASE league and making it through to this week’s county cup final. They have also qualified to represent the East Midlands at national College competitions later this year.
The AASE programme has also seen 11 players represent the Leicester Tigers U18 Academy this year, with an additional two players from the programme recently representing the Leicester Tigers first team in the LV cup against the Wasps.
