The BMC Catering and Hospitality team were proud to assist with the British Pie Awards last week, which took place at Pera in Melton Mowbray on Wednesday 8th March.
Staff and students from BMC’s Catering department supported intake proceedings on Tuesday 7th March, with an intake of almost 900 pies in total. The team from BMC quality checked every pie and separated them into the 21 different classes ready for judging on Wednesday 8th March.
On the day of the awards, BMC student Liam Pochin, alongside chef Vimal Naker and others, heated the appropriate pies ready for judging. Then a team of students (Courtney Clowes, Coleen O’Keeffe, Jakub Lidwin and Brandon Green), alongside staff members Kate Boden and Rachel Roy, organised the pies to be taken for judging – with the entire process taking 4 hours of continuous cooking, checking and distributing!
BMC Principal Chris Ball, who attended last week’s event, said: ‘The British Pie Awards is a truly fantastic event held every year in Melton Mowbray, the Rural Capital of Food. These awards attract hundreds of chefs from all over the country, and we are very proud that BMC’s Catering and Hospitality students were able to contribute towards the running of this event. BMC’s Catering and Hospitality students often have the opportunity to enter regional and national competitions themselves, with Level 3 Professional Cookery student Joe Smith recently gaining first place at the prestigious Teflon Diamond Standard Awards, and several other students winning a range of awards at the North Warwickshire and Hinckley College Culinaire.’
The British Pie Awards aim to celebrate the heritage of the British Pie and recognise the culinary skills of those individuals who produce them. The awards also aim to promote local British produce and recognise the regional specialities of the different localities within Britain.
