What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships offer a fantastic opportunity to earn while you learn. You will be paid for working and training as an apprentice Site Carpenter. You will normally work on a building site or in domestic and commercial premises, preparing and fixing building components from the initial erection of a new building through to installation of all necessary fixtures and fittings, as well as a range of repair and maintenance activities.

The minimum wage for apprentices is £4.15 per hour NMW (from 1st April 2020). If you’re over 19 years of age, check the government website for up-to-date wage details: https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates.

You will spend one day in college and the rest of the week developing your practical skills, behaviours and on-the-job knowledge in your workplace.

You will:

  • Work alongside experienced staff
  • Gain job-specific skills, knowledge and behaviours in the workplace
  • Earn a wage and get holiday pay
  • Be self-motivated to complete an online portfolio of evidence
  • Complete practical training and learning to underpin your knowledge
  • Complete required Functional skills Literacy and Numeracy
  • Work to training deadlines for gateway requirements and EPA assessment for the apprenticeship standard

In order to undertake an Apprenticeship you will need to have a job with a contract of employment for at least 30 hours per week, or have a firm offer of employment within your chosen occupational area. If you don’t have a job and are looking for an apprenticeship vacancy, we have provided some advice on how to find an apprenticeship in the section below.

How to Find an Apprenticeship

There are three ways in which you can find an apprenticeship:

Functional Skills

Functional skills are qualifications in English and Maths that equip students with skills required in everyday life, education and the workplace. Some may already have achieved suitable qualifications in these areas (Grade 4/C) but, if not, students will need to achieve English and Maths at Level 1, then be working towards and take the Level 2 exams in both subjects (before the gateway point requirements of the apprenticeship). These are externally set and marked tests, which can be completed either on a computer or in paper format.

What Will You Gain?

This apprenticeship will give you the following:

  • Level 2 Apprentiship Standard in Site Carpentry
  • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Site Carpentry
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English
